Adapting to Super Shoes

Research Says

A study titled “Advanced Footwear Technology in Non-Elite Runners: A Survey of Training Practices and Reported Outcomes” by Matteo Bonato and colleagues (2024), published in Sports, examined how recreational runners use advanced footwear technology (AFT) shoes in their training. The researchers surveyed 61 non-elite runners who used AFT shoes, analyzing their training practices, perceived benefits, and injury patterns. The survey results showed a positive correlation between years of AFT use and weekly training volume, suggesting more experienced runners incorporate these shoes more consistently. However, runners tended to limit their AFT use to specific sessions, with most participants using them selectively rather than for all runs.

Why It Matters

While advanced footwear technology has revolutionized elite running, its effects on recreational runners remain poorly understood. This study reveals that non-elite runners face unique challenges when adapting to AFT shoes, with 13.1% of participants reporting medically diagnosed injuries. The findings show these runners experience significant biomechanical changes and potential injury risks that require careful management. Understanding these patterns is crucial as more recreational runners adopt this technology. Like any advanced equipment that alters biomechanics, AFT shoes demand proper adaptation and strategic use to maximize benefits while minimizing injury risk.

Applied Insights

  • Start Gradually: Allow a 4-8 week adaptation period, starting with 1-2 sessions per week at lower intensity before progressing.
  • Listen to Your Body: The study found that nearly half of runners (49%) experienced calf muscle soreness. These biomechanical shifts mean your body needs time to adapt.
  • Mix Your Footwear:  Integrate AFT shoes selectively into your training schedule. The study shows successful runners reserve their AFT shoes for specific sessions rather than using them for every run.

I’m Thinking

Super shoes are fun to wear, but it’s easy to overdo it when first starting out with them. These survey results highlight the importance of allowing yourself time to adapt to the biomechanical changes brought about by super shoes. This will maximize your ability to avoid injury and gain the full benefits of integrating super shoes into key training sessions.
